Hot on the heels of a terrific first release, Madrid techno talent J.C. offers up a second EP on his new label, Cabrera. Once again it comes from the DJ and producer himself, and once again it shows him to have a true techno style that cannot be ignored.
Long time DJ, producer and label boss J.C. is in a fine run of form and has been for years now. He is a versatile producer who has a signature sound that takes the best of Detroit techno and distill it into his own special sound on labels like Deeply Rooted, A Harmless Deed and others, and produced a fine full length on Fred P’s Soul People in 2015.
First up here is Atlas, a tense and electrifying techno track with uneven drums and pulsing sonar synths that take you deep down the rabbit hole. Expertly concocted so that every sound has its place and makes a very real impact, it is forceful stuff indeed. The Leviathan is more colorful, with circling pads adding an air of spooky intrigue to coarse claps and slick, ticking drums. Heady yet physical it is full of fantastic atmosphere. Last but not least, Paradox Strategy is a combination of the two: it has both ethereal chords that are vulnerable and tender, but tough and driven drums that race you forwards on an arresting groove.
With this release, J.C proves once again that he really can speak through his machines and make music that is full of character despite being so economical in its design.
